Garbage Pail Kids started in 1985 when Topps created a gross, ridiculous parody of the ultra-sweet Cabbage Patch Kids craze. Artist John Pound helped define the original look, and the cards quickly became famous for pun-filled names, disgusting jokes and kids doing things no parent wanted to explain at the dinner table.
They were controversial, occasionally banned from schools, and absolutely everywhere. The line expanded into stickers, toys, a movie and later revivals, and somehow these grubby little disasters never really went away.
Basically: cute dolls got parodied, the 80s lost its mind, and collectors have been happily hoarding gross cardboard children ever since.
